I am looking to capitalize off the opportunity brought by flavored vapes being banned in the US. My idea is to start a business that works with Healthcare insurance companies to collect vapes from people in return for a discount on their plan (similar to how driver’s ed gets people a discount on their car insurance). While doing so, I will database who turns in a vape and keep this information handy if it is ever needed again, possibly to sell to vape companies if the ban is ever lifted. Once I have collected vapes, I will redistribute them only to people who need them, like cigarette smokers. As of right now, I am also exploring the idea of repurposing the vape into an entirely new product, but have not thought of something useful yet. I am open to all suggestions on this matter.
Hello Christopher,
ReplyDeleteI think a good way to think about repurposing a vape pen would be to think of each of the individual components. For example, the atomizer is the heating element. There's a battery that can be charged. There's an LED to signify the charge level of the pen. So if you deconstruct it, maybe you could simply sell those components off to other people.
Another thing you could do is to use the form factor and to create something new. For instance, a vape pen could be maybe repurposed into a pen or highlighter. Maybe you can make designs and create "collector's" pens.
Hope that gets the creative juices flowing!
Hey Christopher! Your idea is excellent and can hopefully help address the vape issue that we are experiencing. However, I do see a challenge that may arise: People who vape tend to have more than one e-cigarette. Would this be factored into the discount to account for people that will turn in many? For example, people will only be allowed to save a max of 10% on their insurance. This is something to consider when addressing this opportunity. I am very curious to see how e-cigarette products can be repurposed into other things. This is a very clever idea wherein by itself it would create another opportunity!

Hi Christopher,
ReplyDeleteThis is a very interesting idea. While I have seen the issue of vaping discussed many times, this is first time I've seen the solution you proposed anywhere. That seems like it could be a win-win-win idea, as it achieves the goals of getting vapes out of the hands of people who don't need them while getting them into the hands of people who do, all while you profit. Good thought.
